1.
SAFETY
a.
Keep track of how many riders you have on each course (the tricky part is
when a rider turns around and goes home without telling anyone, or a rider gets
lost).
b.
Try to get to know the names of the riders.
If someone is missing, ask the group he was with if they know what
happened.
c.
If you find a rider who has missed a turn you can take him back to where
he left the course and allow him/her to continue.
d.
Try to get the riders to be self-sufficient, for example, carry their own
jackets and food. You may not be
around when they need them.
e.
You are not required to provide food or water to the riders but it is a
good idea to carry some just in case.
f.
Try not to give support between controls unless you feel that the rider
cannot get to the next control without it, for example a rider may need a new
tire.
g.
Riders are not allowed to access their drop bag between controls.
h.
Smile and be happy, you are the lighthouse in the stormy seas.
Offer encouragement to down riders, “I know you will finish!”
“Bon Courage” “Things will get better just keep pedaling”.
2.
CONTROL STOPS
a.
Use a different stamp at each control, placing an impression in the space
to the right of the CONTROL LOCATION on the Brevet
Card. Use the same stamp for
all riders at that control.
b.
Place your initials next to the stamped impression.
c.
Log the time on the Brevet Card and the Control Sign In Sheet.
d.
If you know you will miss a control or the finish, instruct riders to
have someone at the store or motel fill in the time, initials and use a store
stamp on their Brevet Cards. A cash
register or ATM receipt will work.
e.
Riders that finish early can leave their Brevet
Card under the windshield wiper of my truck, preferably in a plastic bag.
3.
SAG STRATEGY
If
there is more than one SAG vehicle, make a plan before the start.
a.
Suggestion One Leap Frog
1.
SAG # 1 goes to the NEXT CONTROL after the start while SAG # 2 waits at
the START for approximately one hour
until the START CONTROL closes. (See opening and closing times on Brevet Cards.)
2.
When the START CONTROL closes or when you are sure that we have no late
starters proceed to the NEXT CONTROL.
3.
Check rider’s progress (with SAG # 1 if it exists) at that CONTROL
proceed to next CONTROL.
4.
You should stay at that CONTROL, until all riders depart then proceed to
the next CONTROL, arriving before the lead riders.
b.
Suggestion Two
1.
SAG #1 covers the front half of the group.
2.
SAG # 2 covers the back half of the group.
3.
Riders
will need to put their names on their bags so if a lead rider moves towards the
back, his bag can be switched to the other SAG vehicle.
1.
When the ride is complete, Congratulate the rider and have him/her sign
the back of the Brevet Card.
2.
Fill in the time and Initial for the final control.
3.
Have rider calculate his/her total time and log it on the back of the Brevet
Card.
4.
Give the Brevet Cards and Sign In Sheets to Dan Driscoll, when finished.
I
believe it is harder to organize and support, than it is to ride.
